Introduction
Are you heading to Universal Studios without stopping by CityWalk?
That’s like baking a cake and forgetting the frosting!
Honestly, there’s maybe a 1% chance I’ll take the kids to Universal and not swing by CityWalk. It’s got this magnetic pull that’s impossible to resist, almost like the heart of Orlando beating louder as you get closer.
I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve ended our Universal days here, but it’s become a family tradition for good reason. The bright lights, the lively music, and the tempting smells from the restaurants have their energy, and we always find ourselves drawn back like moths to a flame.
So, to ensure you don’t miss out on anything, here’s my complete guide to all the fun, food, and flair that Universal’s CityWalk offers.
Disclaimer: In this guide we will go step by step of the details so you have a clear vision of all those CityWalk things.
Where is Universal CityWalk?
If you’re new to Orlando, let me help you visualize it. Universal CityWalk is located smack-dab between Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios Florida. It is 9 miles from Disney World, 6 miles from SeaWorld, and just 3 miles away from ICON Park.
If you wish to have a comprehensive view of what Sea World, ICON Park, and Disney have to offer, check out my guides below:
Back to CityWalk…. It’s a massive, 30-acre complex that’s essentially the gateway to the Universal theme parks. To enter either of the parks, you’ll pass right through this bustling district of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues.
It’s a perfect spot to take a breather after the thrilling amusement by the best rides of Universal and enjoy some chill vibes before or after your day in the parks.
What Makes CityWalk Orlando Special?
You might’ve heard about the CityWalk in Hollywood or Japan, but Orlando’s CityWalk is where it’s at. I’m not saying this because I’m a local, but it’s the factual reality. It is the most expansive and jam-packed with fun options, visited by over 20 million people in 2023.
Open daily from 8 AM to 1 AM, it’s the ideal oasis to grab a bite, do a little shopping, or enjoy entertainment. One of my favorite things about CityWalk is how peaceful it can be compared to the hustle and bustle of the theme parks. It’s a great place to escape, even just for a few hours.
The Best Time to Visit CityWalk (and When to Avoid!)
Now, when’s the best time to hit CityWalk? Well, I’ve been here practically every season, and I can tell you from experience: if you want to avoid crowds, mid-to-late January is your golden ticket. The holiday rush is over, tourists have returned to their routines, the kids are back in school, and you’ll have more space to stretch out and explore.
But if you’re like me and can’t resist the holiday charm, early December is the best time to visit CityWalk. It’s still festive, but you won’t be fighting for space everywhere you go. Likewise, Thanksgiving week can also be a fantastic time to visit, with decorations starting to go up and crowds slightly thinning right before the big Christmas rush.
Dressing for a Day (or Night) at CityWalk
Let’s talk about what to wear because I’ve learned this the hard way: Orlando weather can’t decide. Even after living here all my life, I still get caught off guard by a sudden rain shower or heatwave.
My advice?
No matter how fashionable you want to be, opt for comfort. Think good walking shoes (we do a lot of walking), breathable clothes, and, for heaven’s sake, please do not wear socks with sandals. I tried it once, slipped, and well—lesson learned!
More to this, sunscreen, a hat, and lots of water are your best friends here. And if you’re heading out in the evening, maybe pack a light sweater – Florida’s evenings can surprise you with a cool breeze.
Getting to CityWalk: Parking, Tips, and Shortcuts
CityWalk admission is free, which is music to anyone’s ears. But, yes, parking does cost a bit. You’ve got a few options depending on your style (or budget). Universal’s parking garages are shared with the theme parks, so plan for a parking fee unless you arrive via an Uber or taxi, which drop you off right at the entrance.
Parking ranges from general ($32) to prime spots ($50 to $60), with valet options if you wish for something quicker and closer. If you’re staying at one of Universal’s on-site hotels you can take the free water taxi straight to CityWalk.
One of my top tips: parking is free after 6 PM during non-peak times. So, if you want to save some cash, visit later in the day and use that money for a souvenir instead. However, remember that this rule doesn’t apply during special events like Halloween Horror Nights.
Things To do At City Walk Orlando?
What can’t you find at CityWalk? That’s the real question. From fantastic food to top-notch entertainment, this place has it all. Many visitors try (and fail) to experience everything one visits, but that’s fine since it’s just too packed with options.
Want to catch a movie? Done. Are you looking for live music or a lively night out? CityWalk has you covered. How about some mini-golf? You’ll find that, too. Looking for things to do with kids, planning a romantic date night in Orlando, or hanging out with friends?
CityWalk gives you all.
Where to Eat at CityWalk?
The best restaurants at Universal can be found at CityWalk. That’s a big statement, but it’s true. With over 25 dining options, it’s impossible to go hungry. You can find everything from sit-down to quick meals and full-table restaurants.
Let me give you a few of the local recommended and personally favorite ones:
- The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar: This spot is perfect if you love sushi but also want a burger (weird combo, I know). It’s a favorite for me and my husband when we want to try something different.
- Voodoo Doughnut: This place is a must if you’ve got a sweet tooth. My kids love the Voodoo Doll doughnut; there are so many funky flavors. It’s impossible to leave without a box full.
- The Toothsome Chocolate Emporium & Savory Feast Kitchen: You can’t visit CityWalk and skip this place. The milkshakes alone are worth the trip, but the full menu is fantastic, too. My kids love the dessert bar here.
- Bigfire: For a rustic vibe, Bigfire is the place to go. Their open-fire cooking makes everything taste extra special, especially their steaks.
- Antojitos: Mexican street fare that will knock your socks off.
- Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.: I’m a sucker for their BBQ wings, and they’ve got gluten-free options too.
- Hard Rock Café Orlando: Live music and killer salads – it’s the best of both worlds.
- VIVO Italian Kitchen: My husband and I love their pizza and wine nights – it’s the perfect date spot.
If you plan to eat at one of the more popular restaurants, I recommend making a reservation in advance, especially during peak times.

Shopping Options at CityWalk
Now, let’s get to my weakness – shopping! Every time I visit CityWalk, I tell myself I won’t buy anything, and yet I somehow end up with bags of goodies. Moms, you know how it is. CityWalk has everything from quirky gift shops to full-blown retail experiences. My personal favorites:
- Universal Studio Store: This is a great stop for all your Harry Potter merchandise. Wands, robes, and everything in between are perfect if you missed something in the parks.
- Quiet Flight® Surf Shop: If you plan to hit the beach after your theme park days, this shop has those surf and skate essentials.
- Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co.: This store sells super stylish clothing, so you can take home a piece of CityWalk fashion.
- Candy Smith: If you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t leave without snagging some candy or chocolates from here.
- Universal’s Legacy Store: For the movie buffs, this store sells all the classic flicks.
- Kiosks: No trip is complete without a stop at the kiosks scattered throughout CityWalk. They offer jewelry, hats, and more souvenirs than you’ll know what to do with.

Entertainment at CityWalk
So you’ve eaten, you’ve shopped – now what? It’s time to check out the entertainment.
- Universal Cineplex Theatres: Catch a movie in style. We once saw a special Halloween showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show here, and it was very good.
- Hollywood Drive-In Mini Golf: This mini-golf course is so much fun whether you’ve got kids or just a kid at heart. The sci-fi and horror themes are a hit with my family.
- The Great Movie Escape: If you’re a fan of escape rooms, you’ll love this. It has two themes, Back to the Future and Jurassic World, which are incredibly immersive.
- Rising Star Karaoke: Feeling brave? Grab the mic and belt out a tune, or just watch. It’s a guaranteed good time.
Nightlife at CityWalk
Looking for some adult fun? CityWalk transforms at night with plenty of spots to grab a drink or hit the dance floor. My husband and I love sneaking away to these places for a date night:
- Red Coconut Club: This tropical, bi-level club is perfect for sipping martinis and enjoying the live music. It’s sophisticated without being stuffy.
- Hard Rock Live® Orlando: If live music is your thing, Hard Rock is the place to be. They host big-name acts and up-and-coming bands, so there’s always something good happening here.
